Restless legs syndrome, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, and hypersomnia in patients with two parkin mutations
Movement Disorders, 08/19/09
Limousin N et al. – Findings for young pts with 2 parkin mutations showed that their sleep phenotype paralleled clinical and polygraphic sleep recording abnormalities in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (iPD), except for more prevalent restless legs syndrome and absent secondary narcolepsy.
Methods- Study of sleep-wake phenotype in pts with 2 parkin mutations vs iPD
- Sleep interview and overnight video-polysomnography, then multiple sleep latency tests
- Assessment of 11 consecutive pts with 2 parkin mutations (age 35-60 yrs, from 7 families) and 11 sex-matched pts with iPD (age 51-65 yrs)
- Sleep complaints in parkin group vs iPD group: insomnia (73% vs 45%), restless legs syndrome (45% vs none), and daytime sleepiness (45% vs 54%)
- Of parkin pts, 45% had REM sleep without atonia, but only 9% had a definite REM sleep behavior disorder
- All sleep measures similar in parkin and iPD groups
- Central hypersomnia for 2 parkin siblings, characterized by mean daytime sleep latencies of 3 min, no sleep onset REM periods, and normal nighttime sleep
