Brain dopaminergic modulation associated with executive function in Parkinsons disease
Movement Disorders, 08/19/09
Farid K et al. – Results support a critical role for dopamine in control of executive functions in pts with Parkinson's disease (PD).
Methods- fMRI to examine functional influence of dopa therapy on neural activity during go/no-go task
- Subjects: 9 pts with/without levodopa treatment and in matched controls
- Same performance during go/no-go task for pts vs controls
- Brain activation patterns differed by dopaminergic status
- Drug-off state characterized by more widely distributed brain activity, mainly in bilateral caudate
- Levodopa did not fully restore normal brain activation and induced changes in the pattern of cingulate cortex activity
- Changes more pronounced in rostral part in the drug-off state and in the caudal part after levodopa intake
