Louie S et al. – The onset of motor abnormalities in Parkinson's disease (PD) is usually unilateral. However, current therapeutic trials do not analyze separately the performance of the more affected (MA) and less affected (LA) limbs. The findings highlight the value of analyzing separately the MA and LA sides in subjects with PD, especially for clinical trials of potential disease modifying agents in early stages of disease.

Our study highlights the value of analyzing separately the motor disability of the more affected versus lesser affected side in a person with Prakinson's disease. As the disease always starts on one side we found that when very early stage subjects were studied it appeared that the lesser affected side was at an earlier stage of disease. To assess the disease modifying effect of potential therapeutics it might be useful to study the effect of the therapeutic in delaying the progression of disability of the lesser affected side. We show that there are simple quantitative measures that can be used for such studies.
