Mild cognitive impairment in rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder and Parkinson's disease
Annals of Neurology , 08/17/09
Gagnon JF et al. – In both its association with Parkinson's disease (PD) and its idiopathic form, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is an important risk factor for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Except for visuoconstructional and visuoperceptual problems, RBD may be an important determinant of cognitive impairment in PD.
Methods- Study of frequency and subtypes of MCI in idiopathic RBD, and PD in association with RBD
- Comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation for 112 pts without dementia or major depression
- Of 112 pts: 32 idiopathic RBD pts, 22 PD pts polysomnography-confirmed RBD, 18 PD pts without RBD, and 40 healthy controls
- Standard diagnostic criteria for comparison of proportion of pts with MCI between groups
- MCI in 50% of idiopathic RBD pts and 73% of PD pts with RBD
- MCI in only 11% of PD pts without RBD and 8% of controls
- Presence of MCI significantly greater in idiopathic RBD pts and PD pts with RBD vs PD pts without RBD and controls
- Worse performance on neuropsychological tests assessing visuoconstructional and visuoperceptual abilities for PD pts with RBD vs idiopathic RBD pts
