A survey of family doctors on the likeability of migraine and other common diseases and their prevalence of migraine
Cephalalgia, 08/11/09
Evans RW et al. – Doctors reported a personal history of migraine in the prior 1 year of 22.8% and 45.6% lifetime, with 17% becoming aware for the first time that they personally had migraine after attending the lecture. Respondents with a personal history of migraine liked to treat migraine more than those without a history.

| In every specialty, we all may have our favorite disease, disorder, or specialty. But what about a less favorite one? Do we keep up with the latest research or are we as interested in our patients with that condition? However, the patient doesn't owe us an interesting disease. In this survey, neurological diseases were less likable perhaps due to "neurophobia" as well as fibromyalgia for obvious reasons to the clinician discussed in the paper (see table below). In this survey, we also focused on migraine which is often neglected in medical education and underdiagnosed. In our survey, 17% of the family physicians became aware for the first time that they personally had migraine after listening to a lecture on migraine. This suggests that headache education has a way to go as most migraines and headaches are treated by primary care physicians. |
