Bowser R et al. – A review of proteomics for diagnosis and treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and related diseases summarizes the protein biomarkers proposed for clinical use in motor neuron diseases (MNDs) and discusses directions for future research.

Methods

Review of proteomics for diagnosis and treatment of ALS and related diseases

Results

Protein-based biomarkers for ALS and other MNDs have many potential clinical utilities, including diagnostic, prognostic, and drug development indications
Potential protein biomarkers proposed for MNDs over the past decade
Clinical use based on these initial discoveries is pending further verification studies, then large validation and qualification studies
Validation phase of biomarker development must include study of additional pt populations, including disease mimics
Important regulatory issues affect timing and strategy for biomarker assay development in ALS and other MNDs
Extensive collaboration is critical between academic clinicians, scientists, and biotechnology/pharmaceutical industries for continued development of protein biomarkers for MNDs
