Open muscle biopsy in suspected myopathy: diagnostic yield and clinical utility

• Identification of pre-biopsy factors that may predict useful clinical results for suspected myopathy
• Evaluation of 258 muscle biopsies for suspected myopathy

• Specific clinical diagnosis after muscle biopsy in 43% of cases
• Based on biopsy, clinical diagnosis changed in 47% of cases and treatment changed in 33% of cases
• Results either led to specific clinical diagnosis or change in diagnosis/treatment in 74% of pts
• Positive family history of myopathy and findings of myopathic irritability on electromyography had negative predictive value for diagnosis change
