Methods- Study of the diagnostic yield and clinical utility of open muscle biopsy
- Identification of pre-biopsy factors that may predict useful clinical results for suspected myopathy
- Evaluation of 258 muscle biopsies for suspected myopathy
- Specific clinical diagnosis after muscle biopsy in 43% of cases
- Based on biopsy, clinical diagnosis changed in 47% of cases and treatment changed in 33% of cases
- Results either led to specific clinical diagnosis or change in diagnosis/treatment in 74% of pts
- Positive family history of myopathy and findings of myopathic irritability on electromyography had negative predictive value for diagnosis change
