Proton spectroscopy in patients with post-traumatic headache attributed to mild head injury
Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain, 07/31/09
Sarmento E et al. – Proton magnetic resonance imaging (MRS) may be a useful imaging marker for post-traumatic headaches (PTH) following mild injury. Future studies should contrast PTH following mild vs severe trauma, as well as PTH with other forms of headache, to clarify if the findings are specific to disease, may be correlated with disease severity, or are unspecific headache markers.
Methods- Study of whether spectroscopy MRS shows markers of PTH following mild head injury (MHI)
- Imaging of 17 pts with PTH following MHI and 12 controls, using Proton MRS (1-HS MRI)
- Estimation of metabolic ratios of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and choline (Cho), relative to creatine (Cr)
- NAA values reduced in right/left anterior regions of frontal lobe white matter; anterior, and posterior medial region of frontal lobes, and medial region of parietal lobes for pts with PTH following MHI vs controls
- Cho measures statistically increased in posterior region of white matter of right side fontal lobe, anterior medial region of frontal lobe, and medial region of parietal lobes for pts with PTH following MHI vs controls
