Arm and hand skills: Training preferences after stroke
Disability & Rehabilitation, 07/31/09
Timmermans AAA et al. – An inventory of skills for post-stroke pts can be used for implementation of exercises in rehabilitation technology. Motivation for skill training relates to optimizing participation level vs function or activity level. Fndings suggest that client-centered assessment is advocated to set therapy goals that match pt training preferences.
Methods- Report of an inquiry into skill preferences of post-stroke pts regarding arm-hand training
- Study of the relationship between use of affected arm and pt training preference
- Data collection by semi-structured interview of 20 subacute and 20 chronic stage post-stroke pts, based on an adaptation of the motor activity log
- Subacute and chronic pts agreed on 7 of 10 most preferred training skills
- Pt preferences related mostly to 'manipulation in combination with positioning' and 'manipulation'
- 8 motivation aspects for skill training identified as important
- Positive correlation between skill preference scores and use of impaired arm
