Getting the balance right: A randomised controlled trial of physiotherapy and exercise interventions for ambulatory people with multiple sclerosis
BMC Neurology, 07/21/09
Coote S et al. – An ongoing randomized controlled trial will analyze data for ambulatory multiple sclerosis (MS) pts trial undergoing physiotherapy and exercise. Sub-group analysis is pending sufficient pt recruitment.
Methods- Multi-center, single-blind, block randomized, controlled trial
- Pt recruitment via t 10 regional offices of MS Ireland
- Telephone screening for eligibility and stratification by mobility section of the Guys Neurological Disability Scale
- Randomization after a block of subjects of the same strand in the same geographical region have consented
- Strand A: MS pts who walk independently or use 1 stick to walk outside
- Strand A randomization to yoga, physiotherapist-led exercise class, fitness instructor-led exercise class. or control group with no change in exercise habits
- Strand B: MS pts who walk with bilateral support or a rollator or who use a wheelchair for longer distance outdoors
- Strand B randomization to 1:1 physiotherapist-led intervention, group intervention led by physiotherapist, group yoga intervention or control group with no change in exercise habits
- Physiotherapist assessment; blind to group allocation at wk 1, wk 12 (after 10 wks intervention or control), and at 12-wk follow up
- Primary outcome measure for both strands: Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale
- Secondary outcomes: Modified Fatigue Impact Scale, 6-Minute Walk test, and muscle strength measured with hand-held dynamometry
- Strand B additional tests: Berg Balance Test and Modified Ashworth Scale
- Recording at initial assessment of confounding variables: sensation, coordination, proprioception, range of motion and other impairments
