Migraine and biomarkers of endothelial activation in young women
Stroke, 07/27/09
Tietjen GE et al. – In premenopausal women with migraine, particularly migraine with aura (MA), evidence shows increased endothelial activation, a component of endothelial dysfunction.
Methods- Study of whether endothelial activation markers are associated with migraine in a population of premenopausal women
- Subjects: women age 18–50 yrs with/without migraine and free from cardiovascular disease
- Evaluation by tests of coagulation, fibrinolysis, inflammation, and oxidative stress
- Coagulation tests: von Willebrand factor activity, prothrombin fragment
- Fibrinolysis tests: tissue–type plasminogen activator antigen
- Inflammation test: high–sensitivity C–reactive protein
- Oxidative stress tests: homocysteine, total nitrate/nitrite concentrations, thiobarbituric acid–reactive substances
- MA for 61 pts; migraine without aura (MO) for 64 pts; controls, 50
- Higher adjusted odds ratios for elevated von Willebrand factor activity (6.51 MA; 4.59 MO); elevated high–sensitivity C–reactive protein (7.99 MA; 2.63 MO); lower nitrate/nitrite levels (6.60 MA; 3.03 MO) for women with migraine vs controls
- Within migraine group, von Willebrand factor activity correlated with tissue–type plasminogen activator antigen and nitrate/nitrite
- Trend with high–sensitivity C–reactive protein
