Effect of a 4-week period of unloaded leg cycling exercise on spasticity in multiple sclerosis
NeuroRehabilitation, 07/17/09
Sosnoff J et al. – The reported pattern of results suggests that chronic, unloaded leg cycling exercise is associated with improvements in spasticity from the pt’s perspective, but neither improves nor worsens spasticity from electrophysiological and clinical perspectives.
Methods- Small pilot study of the effect of a 4-wk period of unloaded leg cycling on spasticity in ptswith multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Use of quasi-experimental method for 22 MS pts: 12 exercise pts or 10 controls
- Exercise condition: unloaded leg cycling for 30 min/session, 3 times/wk, across 4-wk period
- Control condition: control for passage of time and instrumentation effects
- H-reflex, modified Ashworth scale (MAS), and Multiple Sclerosis Spasticity Scale (MSSS-88) collected before, 1-day after, and 1 and 4 wks after the 4-wk period
- 4-wk period of unloaded leg cycling exercise not associated with reductions in H-reflex or MAS
- Exercise condition associated with reduction in MSSS-88 scores
