A pilot study of a comparison between a patient scored numeric rating scale and clinician scored measures of spasticity in multiple sclerosis
NeuroRehabilitation, 07/16/09
Anwar K et al. – The spasticity Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) is a valid and reliable tool to assess spasticity with a moderate to high level of correlation with other clinician-rated instruments used to assess spasticity.
Methods- Study to assess the validity and reliability of a NRS for measurement of spasticity in multiple sclerosis
- Longitudinal study with multiple comparators over 2 clinic visits
- Subjects: 35 pts with diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) at a rehabilitation clinic
- The test/re-test reliability of the NRS showed high correlation between 2 visits
- Construct validity assessed by examining the relationship between mean spasticity NRS and each of the other spasticity assessment tools
- Statistically significant correlation between subject's mean NRS diary scores and Modified Ashworth Scale scores at both visits
- Moderate, statistically significant correlation between mean NRS diary scores and the Tardieu Scale
