A pilot study of a comparison between a patient scored numeric rating scale and clinician scored measures of spasticity in multiple sclerosis

Anwar K et al. – The spasticity Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) is a valid and reliable tool to assess spasticity with a moderate to high level of correlation with other clinician-rated instruments used to assess spasticity.

Methods

Study to assess the validity and reliability of a NRS for measurement of spasticity in multiple sclerosis
Longitudinal study with multiple comparators over 2 clinic visits
Subjects: 35 pts with diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) at a rehabilitation clinic

Results

The test/re-test reliability of the NRS showed high correlation between 2 visits
Construct validity assessed by examining the relationship between mean spasticity NRS and each of the other spasticity assessment tools
Statistically significant correlation between subject's mean NRS diary scores and Modified Ashworth Scale scores at both visits
Moderate, statistically significant correlation between mean NRS diary scores and the Tardieu Scale
