Recombinant interferon-beta therapy and neuromuscular disorders
Journal of Neuroimmunology, 07/17/09
Stübgen JP et al. – A review of recombinant interferon–beta (IFNbeta) therapy in neuromuscular disorders summarizes mechanisms of action and results of small studies and anecdotal reports; controlled, prospective studies must define the full potential of this cytokine for this group of diseases.
Methods- Review of recombinant IFNbeta therapy in neuromuscular disorders
- Recombinant IFNbeta may either treat or cause autoimmune neuromuscular disorders by altering immune system networks
- Direct antiviral, antiproliferative and immunomodulatory properties well–established for IFNbeta
- Recombinant IFNbeta approved for relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis
- Immunomodulatory effects of IFNbeta failed to show consistent benefit for various autoimmune neuromuscular diseases
