Headaches in the different phases of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis: A tendency for stabbing headaches during relapses

Ergun U et al. – The high frequency of primary stabbing headaches (PSHs) in relapse was notable and not previously reported in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.
Methods- Study to determine headaches using ICHD-II in different phases of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
- Evaluation of correlation between headaches and several disease features
- Most common headaches in remission: migraine (41.2%) and tension-type headaches (20.6%)
- Most common in relapsing phase: primary stabbing headache (PSH) (27.8%)
- Headaches independent of disease duration, extended disability status scale, Beck depression inventory scores, and treatments
- Total number of headaches correlated with periventricular lesions
- Tension-type headaches correlated with spinal lesions in remission
- Total number of headaches correlated with brain stem lesions in relapsing phase
