Inpatient rehabilitation services for patients after stroke in Thailand: A multi-centre study

• Goal to set a baseline for measuring development of medical rehabilitation services and outcomes for pts after stroke and promoting rehabilitation medicine in Thailand
• Multi-center, prospective study
• Subjects: stable post-stroke pts in Thai Stroke Rehabilitation Registry (TSRR), age ≥18 yrs, able to follow 1-step command and sit for ≥ 30 min
• Rehabilitation services recorded daily as units of treatment (1 unit=20 min)
• Calculation of length of stay and treatment costs

• Of 327 enrolled pts, 285 (87.2%) completed treatment program
• Mean length of stay: 29.4 (SD 17.9) days
• Average number of total treatment units for stroke rehabilitation: 319.5 (range 27–1674 units)
• Top 3 services provided: 205 units of nursing, 40 units of physical therapy and 34 units of occupational therapy
• Mean total cost for all treatments during rehabilitation: 28,399 (SD 22,511) baht (approximately USD 789)
• Ratio of costs not related to rehabilitation vs those related to rehabilitation: ~ 2:1
