Prevalence of restless legs syndrome: A community-based study from Argentina
Parkinsonism & Related Disorders, 06/26/09
Persia GG et al. – Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common disorder in the Argentinian population, with similar prevalence for American and European populations but significantly higher than that for Native South Americans. The predominantly European roots of the Argentinean population may explain these differences.
Methods- Community-based study to estimate relative prevalence of RLS in Argentina
- Sample of 471 pts from high (Buenos Aires) and low population density areas (3 cities of <35,000 inhabitants)
- Self-assessment questionnaire with International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) diagnostic criteria to determine RLS symptoms
- Clinically significant RLS defined as symptoms present ≥2 times a week
- RLS criteria reported: 4 criteria in 20.2%
- Female/male ratio of 3:1; women younger than men
- RLS prevalence clinically significant in 10.8% of subjects: 12.4% from high population density vs 2.60% from low population density areas
