Role of intravenous levetiracetam in acute seizure management of children

Kirmani BF et al. – Intravenous (IV) levetiracetam can be used adjunctively or as monotherapy in children with status epilepticus and acute exacerbation of seizures.
Methods- Status epilepticus defined as seizure duration >30 minutes
- Retrospective study of data from children treated with IV levetiracetam for status epilepticus and acute exacerbation of seizures
- Data retrieval from institution's electronic medical records for status epilepticus pts with acute exacerbation of seizures who received IV levetiracetam
- Levetiracetam load of 25-50 mg/kg for 32 status epilepticus pts: age 2 mo-18 yrs; 17 (53.1%) males; 15 (46.8%) females
- Favorable response to IV levetiracetam for all pts
- Status epilepticus ceased clinically and electrographically
- IV levetiracetam after fosphenytoin and Ativan with no response for 18 pts (56.5%)
- No serious side effects reported
- Discharge on levetiracetam monotherapy for 15 pts (46.8%)
- Levetiracetam as adjunctive therapy after hospital discharge for 9 (28.1%) pts
