Age at onset of epilepsy as a determinant of intellectual impairment in temporal lobe epilepsy
Epilepsy and Behavior, 06/22/09
Kaaden S et al. – In early-onset temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), results for the effect of age at onset of epilepsy (AOE) on IQ and memory are interpreted to show developmental delay of extratemporal lobe functions vs cognitive decline due to longer duration of epilepsy.
Methods- Study of IQ and memory in 188 pts (age >16 yrs) with TLE and an AOE before age 14 (91 pts) or after age 15 (97 pts) yrs
- Earlier AOE did not differentially affect memory aspects more associated with temporomesial structures
- Earlier AOE negatively affected IQ and aspects of memory more related to temporolateral and extratemporal lobe structures
- Earlier AOE also associated with lower educational levels
- No assumption that these findings are lost with chronicity of epilepsy
