Parsing brain activity associated with acupuncture treatment in Parkinson's diseases
Movement Disorders, 06/19/09
Chae Y et al. – Findings suggest that acupuncture treatment may aid improvement in motor functioning of Parkinson's disease (PD) pts via the basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuit.
Methods- Use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for neural mechanisms underlying the effect of specific and genuine acupuncture treatment on motor function in PD pts
- fMRI scans (3) in random order in block design:
- 1) Verum acupuncture (VA) treatment
- 2) Covert placebo (CP)
- 3) Overt placebo (OP)
- Assessment at motor-function implicated acupoint GB34 on left foot of 10 PD pts
- Calculation of contrast that subtracts the blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) response for the acupuncture effect (VA vs CP) and the placebo effect (CP vs OP)
- Significant improvement in motor function of the affected hand after acupuncture treatment
- Activation of the putamen and primary motor cortex when PD pts received acupuncture (VA vs CP)
- Activations correlated with individual enhanced motor function
- Expectation towards acupuncture modality (CP vs OP) elicited activation over the anterior cingulate gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, and superior temporal gyrus
