Clinical characteristics and associated comorbidities in diabetic patients with restless legs syndrome

Greco D et al. – Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a serious and not uncommon problem for diabetes mellitus pts. This syndrome is closely related to diabetic neuropathy and probably to metabolic factors in its pathogenesis. RLS diagnosis is often delayed; however, because RLS can be effectively treated, better education of the general medical community is necessary for greater awareness of RLS.
Methods- Study of clinical characteristics and risk factors associated with RLS among diabetes pts
- Retrospective study of all diabetic inpatients with RLS over 18 mo
- Detailed history, blood laboratory profile and electrophysiological evaluation for all pts
- RLS in 23 pts
- RLS pts had poorly controlled diabetes and had associated comorbidities
- Comorbidities: high prevalence of diabetic neuropathy (96%) and metabolic syndrome (74%)
- Median duration of RLS symptoms onset: 2.8 yrs
