Prevalence and distribution of fasciculations in healthy adults: Effect of age, caffeine consumption and exercise

• Study of the prevalence and distribution of fasciculations in healthy adults
• Assessment of effect of age, caffeine and exercise
• Ultrasonography for fasciculations in 58 healthy adults in various age categories
• Questionnaires for effect of caffeine and regular exercise on presence of fasciculations
• Test of effect of strenuous exercise on fasciculations in 10 healthy adults

• Ultrasonography showed fasciculations for 25 pts (43%), mostly in the abductor hallucis longus muscle
• Fasciculations only sporadic in above-knee muscle groups
• Pts with fasciculations significantly older than pts without
• Caffeine and regular physical exercise did not influence prevalence of fasciculations
• Strenuous physical exercise caused temporary increase in fasciculations, but only in lower leg muscles
