Fermont J et al. – Fasciculations in healthy adults above the knee should raise suspicion and may warrant further investigation.

Methods

Study of the prevalence and distribution of fasciculations in healthy adults
Assessment of effect of age, caffeine and exercise
Ultrasonography for fasciculations in 58 healthy adults in various age categories
Questionnaires for effect of caffeine and regular exercise on presence of fasciculations
Test of effect of strenuous exercise on fasciculations in 10 healthy adults

Results

Ultrasonography showed fasciculations for 25 pts (43%), mostly in the abductor hallucis longus muscle
Fasciculations only sporadic in above-knee muscle groups
Pts with fasciculations significantly older than pts without
Caffeine and regular physical exercise did not influence prevalence of fasciculations
Strenuous physical exercise caused temporary increase in fasciculations, but only in lower leg muscles
