Anosmia after perimesencephalic nonaneurysmal hemorrhage
Stroke, 06/16/09
Greebe P et al. – Anosmia occurs in 1 of every 16 pts with perimesencephalic hemorrhage, which is lower than previously reported rates after coiling in pts with subarachnoid hemorrhage but higher than rates after coiling for unruptured aneurysms. These data suggest that blood in the vicinity of the olfactory nerves plays a role in development of anosmia.
Methods- Study of the prevalence of anosmia in pts with nonaneurysmal perimesencephalic hemorrhage
- Assessment of all pts admitted with perimesencephalic hemorrhage between 1983-2005
- Structured questionnaire for pt interview
- Calculation of proportion of pts with anosmia with corresponding 95% CIs
- Of 148 pts, 9 (6.1%) reported anosmia shortly after perimesencephalic hemorrhage
- Anosmia disappeared in 2 pts after 8-12 wks
- Anosmia persisted after mean follow-up of 9 yrs in 7 pts
