Seizure - European Journal of Epilepsy, 06/12/09
Ping Z et al. – Anterior corpus callosotomy with a keyhole approach produces highly favorable outcomes for both generalized tonic–clonic seizures (GTCSs) and atonic or tonic seizures with a low risk for complications.
Methods- Study of the efficacy and safety of anterior corpus callosotomy with a keyhole approach on refractory seizures
- Evaluation of this procedure for drop attacks (DAs) and GTCSs
- Anterior corpus callosotomy for all 31 refractory seizure pts without other epilepsy surgery
- Assessment for seizure response and procedure complications
- Seizure types: 26 GTCS; 9 atonic or tonic seizures with DA
- GTCS pts, 84.6% had ≥50% decrease in seizure frequency; 61.5% had ≥80% reduction
- DA pts: 77.8% had ≥50% decrease in seizure frequency; 55.6% had ≥80% reduction
- No statistically significant differences between the groups in final efficacy
- Overall complication rate for corpus callosotomy: 12.9%
- Permanent complication rate: 3.2%
