Marklund N et al. - These results suggest that monitoring of interstitial T-tau and Abeta42 by using microdialysis may be an important tool when evaluating the presence and role of axonal injury following TBI.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Niklas Marklund, 06/05/09

In our Department, we repetedly use microdialysis for the neurochemical monitoring of the injured human brain. For many years, we have used microdialysis for the bedside evaluation of energy metabolic changes following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Now we have the tools to use microdialysis to also evaluate peptide biomarkers and biomarkers with a molecular weight of up to 100kDa. Our published data suggests that there were marked differenced among patients with focal and diffuse TBI in the levels of T-tau and Abeta42 obtained using microdialysis. We believe that continous use of these biomarkers in the injured human brain may be a tool to increase our understanding of the pathophysiology of human axonal injury and to further study the link between TBI and cognitive disturbances and dementias.
