Metabolic syndrome and C-reactive protein in stroke prediction: A prospective study in Taiwan
Metabolism-Clinical and Experimental, 06/08/09
Chen PC et al. – Both C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and the metabolic syndrome (MetS) are independent factors associated with stroke among ethnic Chinese.
Methods- Study of whether stroke was associated with MetS and CRP levels in an ethnic Chinese population and whether these 2 factors add to traditional risk factors in predicting stroke risk
- Subjects: 65 first-time stroke pts and 109 stroke-free controls from a community cohort
- Follow-up: 10-yr period until 2005
- Measurement of MetS, CRP levels, and traditional risk factors in 1994-1995
- Multivariate logistic regression adjusted stroke odds ratio: 2.55 (95% confidence interval, 1.05-6.23) for subjects in top tertile CRP levels vs bottom tertile levels in controls
- Risk not attenuated after further adjustment for MetS
- Risk for stroke associated with MetS eliminated after model inclusion of hypertension and diabetes
- Area under receiver operating characteristic curves for traditional risk factors (0.676) improved little by adding CRP (0.691), MetS (0.688), or combination of these 2 variables (0.702)
