Antimigraine drugs: new frontiers
Neurological Sciences, 05/12/09
Rapoport A - There are many acute care and preventive medications for the treatment of migraine. However, patients may often find that their headaches are not under optimal control. There are several targets that have been looked at and studied for the production of new, more effective medications. There are also effective devices for therapy of migraine. A list of targets will be put forth and a small number of them will be described in greater detail in this paper.

| This article presents a few of the most exciting up and coming therapies in migraine. A new category of acute treatment, CGRP antagonism is detailed. Then there are 3 older medications that will soon be able to be given in a different route: sumatriptan by patch, DHE by oral inhalation and ketorolac by nasal spray. For chronic headache, occipital nerve stimulation is being investigated. Alan Rapoport, M.D. Clinical Professor of Neurology The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Los Angeles, CA |
