Is restless legs syndrome underrecognized? Current management
Joint, Bone, Spine, 11/12/08
Vergne-Salle P et al. – A review article to discuss the diagnostic criteria, the etiologies, and treatment options for restless leg syndrome (RLS).
- RLS is a sensory-motor neurological disorder responsible for sleep disruption
- 10% to 15% of individuals may be affected in the population
- Venous insufficiency, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, neuropathy, polyarthritis, or fibromyalgia are usually considered before RLS
- RLS is either idiopathic or secondary to another condition or to a medication
- Treatments: dopaminergic agents, first-line drugs have a better safety profile than levodopa
- Benzodiazepines, weak opioids, and anticonvulsants are second-line agents/li>
- Strong opioids and combination therapy should be reserved for patients with severe refractory RLS
