Abnormal regional benzodiazepine receptor uptake in the prefrontal cortex in patients with mild traumatic brain injury
Hashimoto K et al. – A 123I-iomazenil single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) study shows focally altered benzodiazepine receptor uptake in the prefrontal cortices in pts with mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods- Study of possible abnormalities in benzodiazepine receptor uptake in brains of pts with mild TBI
- SPECT for 9 unmedicated pts with mild TBI and 5 matched controls
- SPECT scan 180 min after tracer injection
Results- Significant increase in benzodiazepine receptor uptake in prefrontal cortex for all 9 pts vs controls (>2 standard deviations higher than mean for controls)
- Significantly higher frontal association cortex-to-average global brain activity ratios for all 9 pts vs controls
