Combination treatment with progesterone and vitamin D hormone may be more effective than monotherapy for nervous system injury and disease
Cekic M et al. – A review summarizes pre-clinical research and two recent clinical trials and reports that combination treatment with progesterone (PROG) and vitamin D hormone may be more effective than monotherapy for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and disease. Methods- Review of progesterone and vitamin D hormone as combination treatment vs monotherapy for nervous system injury and disease
Results- PROG and its metabolites exert beneficial effects after TBI via metabolic and physiological pathways to reduce damage in different tissues and organ systems
- Emerging data show 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (VDH) as a neuroprotective steroid hormone, its pathways differ from PROG
- VDH and PROG: high safety profiles, act on many different injury and pathological mechanisms; clinically relevant; easy to administer; inexpensive
- Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent, especially in elderly and institutionalized pts, and can significantly affect recovery after CNS injury
