Prevalence and distribution of fasciculations in healthy adults: Effect of age, caffeine consumption and exercise
Fermont J et al. – Fasciculations in healthy adults above the knee should raise suspicion and may warrant further investigation. Methods- Study of the prevalence and distribution of fasciculations in healthy adults
- Assessment of effect of age, caffeine and exercise
- Ultrasonography for fasciculations in 58 healthy adults in various age categories
- Questionnaires for effect of caffeine and regular exercise on presence of fasciculations
- Test of effect of strenuous exercise on fasciculations in 10 healthy adults
Results- Ultrasonography showed fasciculations for 25 pts (43%), mostly in the abductor hallucis longus muscle
- Fasciculations only sporadic in above-knee muscle groups
- Pts with fasciculations significantly older than pts without
- Caffeine and regular physical exercise did not influence prevalence of fasciculations
- Strenuous physical exercise caused temporary increase in fasciculations, but only in lower leg muscles
