Trans fat intake increases risk of ischemic stroke

In a study involving 87,025 postmenopausal women in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study, there were 1049 incident cases of ischemic stroke over 663,041 person-years of follow-up. Women in the highest quintile of trans fat intake were at increased risk of ischemic stroke (HR = 1.39) compared with women in the lowest quintile of trans fat intake. Aspirin use modulated the effect of trans fats; ASA users and ASA non-users had HRs for ischemic stroke of 0.95 and 1.66, respectively. Saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fat intake were not associated with ischemic stroke.

New risk factors for chronic migraine identified

As published in the Journal of Neurological Sciences, increase tea consumption (> 4 cups/d), and diet consisting of hot and spicy foods, and weight gain increase the likelihood of chronicity in patients with episodic migraines. During a 12-month prospective study involving 188 patients with episodic migraines, 17.7% developed chronic, daily migraines. Other risk factors included low education, a high frequency of headaches, headaches of long duration, allodynia, and increased symptomatic treatment of headaches.

Ginsenoside-Rd improves outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, the calcium channel antagonist, ginsenoside-Rd, has been shown to improve functional outcomes in patients (n=386) with acute ischemic strokes. The patients received a 14-day infusion of ginsenoside-Rd within 72 hours of stroke onset. The National Institutes of Health Stroke Score was improved at 15 days and the modified Rankin score was improved at 90 days (OR = 1.74).
