The neurological syndrome in adults during the 2011 northern German E. coli serotype O104:H4 outbreak

The outcome of neurological patients in the 2011 northern German Shiga toxin–producing E. coli O104:H4 outbreak was surprisingly good. Magnetic resonance imaging and neuropathological findings point to a mixed toxic and inflammatory pathomechanism leading to largely reversible damage of neuronal function.
