Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is largely a disease of the elderly, with a prevalence of CKD 3–5 of 25% in the general population over the age of 70 years and 30% over the age of 80, compared with 11% overall. Although only a small proportion of individuals with CKD will progress to end–stage renal disease (ESRD), increasing life expectancy means that the number of older people with ESRD will escalate.
