Uraemic pruritus: starting from scratch to relieve itch
Drugs & Therapy Perspectives, 10/16/09
Pruritus is a common complication of end–stage renal disease that negatively impacts health–related quality of life. Because of the multifactorial and poorly understood pathogenesis of uraemic pruritus, finding an effective treatment for this disease has been problematic. The management of uraemic pruritus should include optimization of dialysis efficacy, adequate skin hydration and correction of calcium–phosphorus metabolism abnormalities, with pharmacological and non–pharmacological treatments being used as necessary to treat refractory disease.
