Eddington H et al. – Mass transfer of Ca and Mg in APD patients using conventional dialysis fluid was not related to drain volume in this study, which differs to studies in CAPD. Flux of Ca and Mg during icodextrin use was found to be dependent on ultrafiltration rate and not dialysate or serum concentration.

Management of calcium balance is now recognised to be very important in dialysis patients, especially since the majority of the world's patients are still using calcium containing phosphate binders. This article highlights the differences one can expect to see in patients using icodextrin as opposed to conventional glucose-based dialysis fluids.
