Effect of MCI-196 on serum phosphate and cholesterol levels in haemodialysis patients with hyperphosphataemia: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study

Locatelli F et al. – MCI–196 significantly reduced serum phosphorus, Ca x P and PTH, without effecting serum calcium levels. The additional reduction in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol indicates a possible dual mechanism of action of MCI–196 that has the potential to reduce cardiovascular morbidity in CKD stage 5 patients.

| Pharmacological and clinical research has been very active in the last decade in developing new phosphate binders. We conducted a randomized placebo-controlled trial in CKD stage 5 patients that demonstrated the short-term efficacy and safety of MCI-196, a new calcium-free-metal-free phosphate binder. Moreover MCI-196 brings a significant reduction in cholesterol plasma levels and this ,in addition to phosphate and calcium control, may help to further reduce the cardiovascular risk of CKD patients. Other studies are underway to better characterize the safety profile and long-term effectiveness in controlling calcium phosphate metabolism and also in the lipids control of MCI-196. Therefore there are good prospects that the family of phosphate binders will be extended to new agents such as MCI-196 shortly and this would hopefully help to improve therapy for stage 5 CKD patients. |
