Nut consumption and incidence of hypertension: The SUN prospective cohort
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases, 08/21/09
Martínez-Lapiscina EH et al. – Findings do not provide evidence for an inverse association between nut consumption and incident hypertension in this cohort. Studies with a higher baseline risk of hypertension should further test this relationship.
Methods- Study of association between nut consumption and hypertension incidence among 9919 Spanish pts followed biennially for median of 4.3 yrs
- Assessment of food habits by validated 136-item food-frequency questionnaire
- Classification of nut consumption: rarely/never, 1–3 servings/mo, 1/wk, and 2+/wk
- Classification as incident case of hypertension based on freedom from hypertension at baseline and subsequent report of physician-diagnosed hypertension in ≥1 follow-up questionnaires
- Incidence of hypertension: 12.4/1000 person-yrs
- No association between nut consumption and incidence of hypertension after adjusting for sex, age and other dietary and non-dietary potential confounders
- Results not modified on stratification by sex or to body mass index
