Stefanutti C et al. – A retrospective study on Low–density Lipoprotein Apheresis (IMS–LDLa)—was carried out, which involved 19 centers for LDLa in Italy. The centers were asked to report their data on: quality diagnosis of dyslipidemia and referents for genetic–molecular and clinical diagnosis, cholesterol–lowering drugs and dosages, typology of cardiovascular check–ups at the beginning of treatment and in follow–up, non–cholesterol–lowering drugs with priority for cardiologic drugs, including oral anti–coagulants, and, lastly, information related to the appropriateness of curing patients still under treatment with LDLa and, where possible, news on patients no longer under treatment.

It may be of interest to know that after this initiative other three centers joined the network (now 22). This wide participation, covering practically the entire country allowed to establish the 2nd Italian Consensus Conference on LDL-apheresis updating the former held two decades ago. The net stimulated interdisciplinary collaboration between nephrologists, hematologists, and apheresis experts in general. New multicentre studies -Therapeutic Plasma Exchange in Patients With Severe Hypertriglyceridemia (to be published in 2009); The Italian Registry of Pediatric Therapeutic Apheresis: a concise report on the 2005 activity (already published in 2009); Treatment of symptomatic hyperLp(a)lipoproteinemia with LDL-apheresis (to be sent for peer reviewing and publication) - were carried out by the centers participating to the net . I guess the idea was a good one.
