Thymidine phosphorylase as a prognostic factor in renal cell carcinoma

Padrik P et al. – Study concludes that thymidine phosphorylase (TP) expression level in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is strongly correlated with histologic grade, which is one of well-known prognostic factors in RCC, but TP had no independent prognostic value.

Methods

Aim was to clarify the clinicopathologic significance of TP expression in RCC
TP expression was evaluated with IHC using monoclonal anti-TP Ab in specimens of 70 pts with radically operated nonmetastatic RCC
Semiquantitative analysis, using a scoring system for staining pattern and staining intensity was used

Results

Univariate analysis: factors for survival were age as continuous characteristic, TP expression, histologic grade, and stage
Multivariate analysis: factors significant for survival were age, stage, and histologic grade
TP did not show independent significant value
However, TP had strong correlation with histologic grade
