Thymidine phosphorylase as a prognostic factor in renal cell carcinoma
International Urology and Nephrology, 07/09/09
Padrik P et al. – Study concludes that thymidine phosphorylase (TP) expression level in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is strongly correlated with histologic grade, which is one of well-known prognostic factors in RCC, but TP had no independent prognostic value.
Methods- Aim was to clarify the clinicopathologic significance of TP expression in RCC
- TP expression was evaluated with IHC using monoclonal anti-TP Ab in specimens of 70 pts with radically operated nonmetastatic RCC
- Semiquantitative analysis, using a scoring system for staining pattern and staining intensity was used
- Univariate analysis: factors for survival were age as continuous characteristic, TP expression, histologic grade, and stage
- Multivariate analysis: factors significant for survival were age, stage, and histologic grade
- TP did not show independent significant value
- However, TP had strong correlation with histologic grade
