Melanson TS et al. - Renal vascular anatomy suggests that regulation of vasoactivity is responsible for variations in regional perfusion. Constriction of superficial arterioles should favor redistribution of blood flow toward juxtamedullary glomeruli and the medulla. A complex interaction of endocrine and paracrine agents serves to coordinate regional microperfusion for the purpose of regulating sodium excretion, urinary concentration, countercurrent exchanger efficiency, as well as to provide compensatory effects to prevent renal ischemia.
