Improving outcomes in hypertensive patients: Focus on adherence and persistence with antihypertensive therapy
The Journal of Clinical Hypertension, 06/25/09
Elliott WJ et al. – A review on outcomes in hypertensive pts reports improved outcomes with a focus on adherence and persistence with antihypertensive therapy.
Methods- Review on outcomes in hypertension
- Blood pressure (BP) control rates among treated pts in actual clinical practice are less than optimal despite effective BP control reducing risk of cardiovascular events in hypertension
- Costs of drugs and medical care are key but difficult to estimate both in clinical trials and general clinical practice
- Drug-taking behavior—adherence and persistence with antihypertensive regimens—influences BP control rates
- Rates vary greatly among antihypertensive classes based on many factors affecting pt adherence and persistence, including drug efficacy and tolerability
- Medications with fewer adverse effects associated with increased adherence and lower discontinuation rates
- Widespread use of these drugs (and generic or low-cost formulations) may lead to better long-term BP control and fewer cardiovascular events
