Blood pressure (BP) control rates among treated pts in actual clinical practice are less than optimal despite effective BP control reducing risk of cardiovascular events in hypertension
Costs of drugs and medical care are key but difficult to estimate both in clinical trials and general clinical practice
Drug-taking behavior—adherence and persistence with antihypertensive regimens—influences BP control rates
Rates vary greatly among antihypertensive classes based on many factors affecting pt adherence and persistence, including drug efficacy and tolerability
Medications with fewer adverse effects associated with increased adherence and lower discontinuation rates
Widespread use of these drugs (and generic or low-cost formulations) may lead to better long-term BP control and fewer cardiovascular events
