Baskurt M et al. - Among patients with eGFR between 30 and 60 mL min-1 1·73 m-2 undergoing coronary angiography, oral administration of N-acetylcysteine + theophylline in addition to saline hydration has a beneficial effect in the prevention of CIN.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Murat Baskurt, 06/11/09

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) may loose its' popularity in the prevention of contrast induced nephropathy (CIN) in the following years. Larger scaled studies are needed which are addressing the effect of NAC+theophylline in this contrast mediated complication. I think adenosine antagonists will gain much more interest in the prevention of CIN.
