The annual report on hospital quality suggests principles to guide the development of “the hospital of the future.” Developed by a panel of hospital administrators, clinicians and other experts, the report covers a broad range of issues, from building design to technology, staffing and health care economics. Though economic conditions are expected to slow its pace, the continuing investment in hospital construction offers the opportunity to remake the hospital – its design, culture and practices – to better meet the needs of patients and families and the aspirations of those that provide their care.
