Fatty acid synthase overexpression is an indicator of tumor aggressiveness and poor prognosis in renal cell carcinoma

Horiguchi A et al. - In a study to investigate fatty acid synthase (FAS) expression in pts with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and its impact on clinicopathological parameters, it seems that increased FAS expression could be an indicator of tumor aggressiveness and poor prognosis of RCC. Pts with FAS-positive tumors should be followed closely and carefully, and adjuvant therapy should be considered

• FAS expression in 120 pts with RCC was examined by immunohistochemistry
• Relationship between FAS expression status and various clinicopathological parameters was analyzed
• Survival analysis was performed using the log rank test and a Cox multivariate hazard model

• Of 120 tumors 15% showed positive FAS expression, which was significantly associated with advanced pathological T stage, regional lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, higher histological grade (G3) and microvascular invasion
• Pts with positive FAS expression had significantly shorter cancer-specific survival than those with negative FAS expression
• Multivariate Cox proportional hazards model analysis demonstrated that positive FAS expression was an independent predictor of shortened cancer specific survival
