Exclusive Author Commentary
Hedley Emsley, 11/09/09

This article is a brief guided tour of my own experiences during 5 ½ years as a clinical lecturer. I’ve tried to portray the highs and the lows, the need for a ‘thick skin’, and ultimately how rewarding and fulfilling such a post can be. For sure there will always be scepticism from some – hopefully a minority – about clinical academics. And there are significant challenges – not least having both clinical and academic ‘bosses’. Such a post can also prove a tough testbed for time management skills. Perseverance is often the name of the game when it comes to generating research income – and getting work published. Intriguingly – for an academic role – teaching perhaps figures somewhat less prominently than might be expected. But all in all, such a post comes highly recommended – a great opportunity for those with the aptitude and a genuine desire to combine clinical training, research and teaching roles.
