Exclusive Author Commentary
Morten H. Vatn, 11/10/09

The increased interest in Mucosal healing in IBD, has been caused by the improved efficasy of biologic therapy. MH represents a valuable sign of efficasy and a prognostic marker. In this review, mucosal healing is also refered to as a general prognostic marker of disease outcome, regardless of choice of treatment. The definition of healing is, however, based on different diagnostic tools. The distinction between endoscopic, microscopic and immunologic healing, therefore, represents an interesting discussion for the future.
