High Faecal Calprotectin Levels in Healthy, Exclusively Breast-Fed Infants

Savino F et al. – The authors findings show that the kind of feeding influences the faecal calprotectin concentration, with higher values in healthy exclusively BF infants than in FF ones. This study does not allow us to clearly identify the reason for these finding; this could be due to hormones, cytokines and other immunostimulating and growth factors in human milk, which contribute to the development of the gastrointestinal immune system.

Faecal calprotectin is a useful marker to evaluate intestinal disorders in newborns and infants. Our finding could be relevant in clinical practice and should rise questions about appropriate reference values in the first months of life, when many factors could have an influence. A better assessment of such aspects, in particular the kind of feeding, is required to enhance the diagnostic power of calprotectin in the first period of life. On the other hand, our results confirm the key role of breast-feeding in the maturation of the intestinal immune system.
