Viral obesity: fact or fiction?
Obesity Reviews, 11/06/09
Mitra AK et al. – This review attempted to determine if viral infection is a possible cause of obesity. Also, this paper discussed mechanisms by which viruses might produce obesity. Based on the evidence presented in this paper, it can be concluded that a link between obesity and viral infections cannot be ruled out. Further epidemiologic studies are needed to establish a causal link between the two, and determine if these results can be used in future management and prevention of obesity.

| I think the evidence is convincing that at least Adenovirus 36 is a possible agent causing obesity in humans. We definitely need more epidemiologic studies to find out how much viral agents contribute to the risk of obesity (attributable risk). If viruses cause obesity, the next question would be: can we prevent some cases of obesity by a suitable vaccine (primary prevention), or can we reduce the burden of complications of obesity by providing anti-viral therapy against the causative agent (secondary prevention)? Those questions are yet to answer. |
